About Me
I've been addicted to computers since I used my first one as an eighth grader in 1974. It was an Olivetti Programma 101 that my algebra teacher had in the back of his classroom and I was hooked.
It was the age of mainframe computers. I got my first job in the business right out of High School, writing COBOL programs and editing books for a local book publisher on an IBM Sys-tem 370.
In college, I was a literature major, studying medieval and romantic poetry as well as Shake-speare. I learned to read Chaucer, which comes in remarkably handy even still, when I need a way to get out of a boring conver-sation.
To this day, my wife and I travel every year to the Oregon Shakespeare Festi-val. This past year, we saw seven plays and five days and can't wait for next season!
I wrote my first book in 1981 (while I was still in college) and spent the next 10 years or so writing books about mainframe computer operating systems and COBOL programming.
In 1993 I set out as a freelance writer and wrote my first For Dummies book. That book lasted through 12 editions and led to dozens of other collaborations with the amazing For Dummies team.
I joined the full-time working world in 2005 when I accepted the position of Information Technology Director at Blair, Church & Flynn Consulting Engineers, a small Civil Engineering firm in Clovis, California. For nearly 20 years I've enjoyed guiding this company's technology through many technical changes, including virtualization, cloud computing, hyperconvergence, and now AI.
What's next? I plan to retire soon and move to the Central Coast of California. But I won't give up my life-long love of writing, poetry or the theater.
